Emerging from Calgary's vibrant indie scene, Yvette is a group that thrives on atmosphere and emotion. The band blends broad-spectrum storytelling with jazz-inflected piano lines and radiant vocal harmonies. Since releasing their debut EP in 2018, Yvette has carved out a sound that is both intimate and expansive. Their music feels rooted in community while reaching for something timeless. Tell us the story behind the name “Yvette”
Bobby: Yvette was actually my mothers name. I lost my mom very suddenly when I was 9, and obviously that caries a lot of weight… I think the biggest reason I chose to use her name for this project, was out of the lack of time we had together. I don't remember as much as I would like to about my mother, and this feels like a way of reaching out and saying “Hi! This is what I've been up to, I make music, I miss you, I think about you often” you know? The music isn't always centred around that theme, and it definitely took a very specific group of people to be comfortable using such an important name. Craig and Tyler were the only two people that could have happened with, thank you for being so gracious fellas!

You have been away for a while, what's new in the band?
Bobby: We have two new incredibly talented humans performing with us! Andrés on drums, you likely know him from one of our favourite local bands Oranje, and Jo on vocals. Jo is one of the most talented vocal arrangers I have ever met, and she and our pianist Craig actually just got married this year! There is a complete change in our sound with the new crew, things feel bigger and more defined than ever. Although we love and miss our boy Devon Steele, and we are wishing you the best in Van city baby. 😘

What has been your favourite experience as a band?
Bobby: I have known Tyler and Craig since we were barely adults. We have had so many memories together, obviously good and bad, that I am honestly just endlessly grateful for these dudes. A highlight was definitely our trip to New York as a band in 2018. Getting to stand in the same clubs the greats played in, eating dollar slices, and getting into all sorts of trouble. That trip will forever be one my favourites.
As for the new line up, jamming in Peter & Meg's basement with these humans is always the most fun. I genuinely laugh so hard with this group of people, and they are so talented.

What would you like to see happen in the indie music scene?
Bobby: Honestly right now I'm more interested in learning from the scene. There are so many incredible artists in this city, and so many people act as beacons for this community, and I look up to that so much. I feel it's something that I've personally been lacking in my past, and I really look forward to branching out and sharing this city and our music with the scene.
Later (with you)
What's next for Yvette?
Bobby: We have our first show in 4 years Friday December 19th at The Blox with long time friends I Am The Mountain and Victrix, and we also have a show Thursday January 8th that we'll be announcing soon on our socials! We've been reworking everything for these shows, and we're really excited to show y'all what we've been working on, come catch a set!
There's also been talk of recording in the new year possibly, it would be lovely to get back into the studio together after so many years. Regardless, we love this city, and we are grateful to be a part of Calgary's music scene. Looking forward to 2026 & Beyond!
